The best hostels in Thailand: the coolest spots ranked

Finding the best hostels in Thailand can be quite overwhelming. With the country continuing to boom as a backpacker destination the offer is almost limited less. Luckily for you I visited the country over 5 times, and I am here to help. This read lists the best hostels in Thailand that fulfill all the No Road Back criteria.

All of these hostels are very social without being raunchy party hostels. All of them have good common rooms or big leafy backyards. Their locations are excellent, the beds are comfortable, they have comfortable boutique double rooms as well as dorms and the hostels are run in an environmentally conscious way without compromising on adventure or comfort. Whether you are looking for a hostel in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ayutthaya or one of the Thai islands, we got you covered.

– The best hostels in Bangkok –

1. The yard

Booking Rating: 9.1 / HostelWorld Rating: 9.4

My top favourite hostel in Bangkok is definitely The Yard hostel. If you are traveling on a budget but still like to stay in a pretty place with a nice ambiance, The Yard is a perfect match. The hostel is a ‘green’ hostel and sports great environmental policies but it still provides all the comfort one looks for in a place. Its huge garden is its main perk. Perfect to relax in during the day and a great place to meet other travelers while drinking a beer in the early hours of the evening after a busy day of sightseeing.

The Yard is located in the trendiest area of bangkok: Ari. With a Skytrain BTS station within 5 minutes of walking the hostel is perfectly connected to both the airport as well as the train station. Getting to Khao San road and the old centre is breeze by taking the canal ferries.

2. Here hostel

Booking Rating: 8.8 / HostelWorld Rating: 9.1

The here hostel is probably the best hostel in Bangkok that is located within walking distance from Khao San road. This is where all the bars and crazy party places are. This also means it is located close to all the main old city historic highlights. The awesome thing is, it is located just far enough so you can have a quite place to relax en chill. The leafy garden of here hostel is the best spot to meet fellow travelers and the well outfitted comfortable boutique hostel rooms make sure you will never want to leave.

3. Holy Sheet hostel

Booking Rating: 9.1 / HostelWorld Rating: 9.6

I only discovered Holy Sheet hostel on my last visit to Thailand but I enjoyed it to bits. The boutique hostel itself is small with only a handful of dorms and a small common room. But the owner, Pawin, makes sure that all guest connect by asking their plans and see if plans can be aligned.

On my first night he took me out to his favourite street food stall. The second night we went out to an awesome local little jazz-bar. The dorms are actually private sleeping pods. Very comfortable but still cheap. The place is located only minutes from a BTS Skytrain station, making it perfect the perfect base for exploring the city.

– The best hostels in Chiang Mai –

1. Green Sleep hostel

Booking Rating: 9.4 / HostelWorld Rating: 8.9

I planned on staying only 3 nights but ended up staying 5. Green Sleep Hostel is an incredibly comfortable boutique hostel with comfy sleeping pods, great private-rooms and the best breakfast I’ve had in any hostel around Thailand. The boutique spot is located in the dead centre of old town. It is incredibly clean and they have bicycles for guests to use for free. The social vibes are great. Communal breakfasts make sure that solo travelers always meet like-minded people to go spend the day with.

2. Stamps backpackers

Booking Rating: 9.2 / HostelWorld Rating: 9.7

Stamps is definitely a party hostel but compared to the raunchy establishments of the Slumberparty hostel chain its remarkably clean and comfortable. The staff is great and if you are here to party and meet new people stamps is a must. Its located close to the gates of the old centre and also within walking distance form varies popular backpacker bars.

– The best hostel in Chiang Rai –

Happynest Hostel

Booking Rating: 8.4 / HostelWorld Rating: 9.2

Happynest Hostel is a sustainable boutique hostel with beautiful rooms and all amenities you need. It is probably one of the most stylish in Thailand. It is a social place and the staff actively tries to connect its guests with the locals by providing in-house activities for both. Location wise it is within walking distance from the bus station as well as the bar area.

– Koh Tao hostels –

1. The Dearly Hostel

Booking Rating: 9.4 / HostelWorld Rating: 9.4

This is probably one of the best accommodations in the whole of Thailand, if you don’t love it your mad. Their deluxe suites go for 2800B (EUR 70) a night, and are absolutely dreamlike. If you are traveling solo this sustainable boutique hostel also has dorms on offer which also give you access to the pristine pool and the clean and beautiful amenities. Dorms start at 700B a night, that might be pricey for Thailand, but you get a lot for it in return.

For the same price you can also book a dorm at Savage, on of the most popular hostels on the island, but the people and staff in Savage are just terrible. I stayed there for one night just to see the place and was glad to leave the next.

2. Gecko Republic Jungle

Booking Rating: 8.6 / HostelWorld Rating: 8.0

Looking for a place that is still pretty, but a little friendlier to your budget and which is also one of the most social and lively on the island? Check out Gecko Republic Jungle Hostel. They have dorms ‘pod-style’ starting at 400B, and a great social bar. And similar to Dearly Hostel, the place is run in a sustainable way without compromising on your comfort.

– Koh Phangan hostels –

1. Goodtime Beach Backpackers

Booking Rating: 8.4 / HostelWorld Rating: 8.9

There are many good hotels, resorts and restaurants on Koh Pha Ngan but they don’t all offer the best value for money. An awesome hostel located at the beach which a huge pool and incredible staff (Tommy is golden) is Goodtime Beach Backpackers. Their cheapest beds 250B are a night but you will rarely get this deal and are more likely to pay around 500B. I know, Koh Pha Ngan is not a cheap place. This is for a dorm room with an ensuite bathroom and air conditioning. It is also perfectly located for the half moon party.

Lime & Soda beachfront resort

Booking Rating: 7.2 / HostelWorld Rating: n/a

Lime & Soda is great because it is both a backpackers spot as well as a resort. They have a swimming pool, a social bar, good staff but their biggest draw are their private bungalows with AC for about 800B. Which is great value for money on Koh Phangan.

– The best Koh Chang hostel –

Pajama’s Koh Chang

Booking Rating: 9.0 / HostelWorld Rating: 9.5

Pajamas is definitely the best hostel on the island of Koh Chang. It got great privates as well as luxury dorms. The outdoor deck with large pool is the best place to socialize and meet other travelers and the staff does its best to make your time on the island the best possible.

– Ayutthaya’s best hostel –

1301 Hostels

Booking Rating: 8.4 / HostelWorld Rating: n/a

Price: 200B. A fun, clean and social hostel beautifully located at the river-side. 1301 Hostels is probably the best dorm-option in town. Its only 200B a night and the bunks are spacious with comfy mattresses. Its leafy garden is a great place for relaxing after (or right before) a busy day of temple-hopping. They also have great privates for 750B a night.
