Skiing for beginners: going skiing for the first time

Skiing for beginners can be tough. If your parents never took you skiing as a kid, going skiing for the first time in your adult years can be quite daunting. It sure was for me. Your friends tell you scary stories on how they broke their leg on a particular icy black run and in the same breath exclaim that you’ll be fine. Yeah sure. When you spot the snow-capped peaks on your approach to the mountains you’re thrilled. But as soon as you see the slopes up close in all their steepness and massiveness the sweat starts to break out. 5 year olds whizz past as you’re desperately trying to perform the best ‘Pizza, French fries, Pizza, French fries’ to not die on your first attempt off the baby slopes.

I had an incredible hard time skiing for the first time and in a couple of months I’ll be going on my second trip. Hopefully this time it will be going a bit better. There were a few things I wish somebody told me before hand that could have made my experience a whole lot better. Going skiing for the first time? You might want to read this one.

How we survived the West Highland Way on a mountain bike

Trekking the West Highland Way has been on my to-do list for the last couple of years. It is one of the most beautiful and epic treks in Europe (if not the world!) and considering Scotland is only an hour by aeroplane from Amsterdam (my hometown) I really had no excuse. People take out 6 – 10 days to complete the full 165 kilometres and while I like a good trek or hike, I usually get bored after about 5 days, regardless of the beautiful scenery. So when I read an article by Derek Shanks on doing it by mountain bike in 3 days, I was hooked. This was going to be epic. Looking back at it, with the bruises on my legs barely faded, it absolutely was. But it was also rough, tough, sweaty and terrible at times. So without any sugar-coating, here are the accounts of my trip through the Scottish Highlands.

When I crashed a scooter in the Indonesian jungle

A huge hole in the unpaved road rocks me out of my seat onto my steering wheel. A slight wiggle, my foot slips, the scooter turns sideways, crash.

When you skid over the dirt-road sideways at high velocity with a scooter on top of you, time moves strangely slow. I remember thinking: ‘I am tearing up my skin and there is nothing I can do about it‘ – I was wearing short sleeves and no protection except for a helmet – as I skidded over an unlit dirt-road in the middle of the night in East-Lombok, Indonesia.
